Anyone can use Vroom Content without changing it (see the Vroom Content and Attribution Guidelines for more details). But to change or adapt Vroom Content, you will need a Content License. The Vroom Licensing Toolkit will help you prepare to apply for an [A.L.T. Vroom Content License](https://toolkit.vroom.org/key-terms?restored=1#adaptation-localisation-or-translation-license) that will allow you to adapt Vroom Tips, Brain Building Basics, and other Vroom resources to suit the needs of your community and implementation. You must complete this Toolkit to be considered for an A.L.T. License. 

Do I need to complete the Toolkit?

You should complete the Vroom Licensing Toolkit when you are ready to apply for a Vroom Content License.

When should I complete the Toolkit?

The Vroom Content Adaptation Toolkit takes about three hours to complete. You can stop and start as often as your like. You can also come back to sections you want to read again. The whole process from starting Module 1 to final adaptation approval can take about 5-6 weeks or more, depending on the scale of your project and how much Vroom Content is adapted. This assumes that you will spend at least a week or two reviewing this Toolkit, preparing an adaptation plan, and drafting and submitting a Content License application. Please allow up to 3 weeks for Vroom to review and respond to your application. Vroom Content adaptation review can be also lengthy process. Please allow for at least two weeks from the time you submit your first 25 adapted Tips for Vroom to review them and provide feedback. Depending on amount of Vroom Content you are adapting, this review process may require several rounds of feedback and updates prior to adaptation approval.  

How long will the Toolkit take to complete? 

No. The Toolkit culminates in the Vroom Content license application and only licensees are allowed to adapt Vroom Content. Additionally, any adaption done prior to completing the Toolkit is likely to be incomplete and not ready for approval.  

Can I adapt Vroom Content before completing the Toolkit? 

No. We strongly advise against starting the adaption process prior to obtaining a Vroom Content License. Not all applicants will be granted a license for adaptation. 

Once I complete the Toolkit, can I adapt Vroom Content? 

All Vroom Content must be properly attributed to Vroom using one of our logo lock-ups provided.  If you are you are using adapted Vroom Tips or other Vroom Content, you should you will be directed in your license to use either the “Powered by Vroom” or “Inspired by Vroom” logo lockups alongside the Vroom Content to indicate that the content came from us, but the primary logo and design of the materials would be yours. The Vroom logo would be smaller and secondary in this context and tied to and used only in connection with the Vroom Content.

If you are doing a presentation and you are “talking about Vroom” (but not implying our endorsement or affiliation and/or are not using any Vroom Content) and you want a logo to go with it, that would be considered “referential” as you are referring to Vroom not actually using it. This would be the standard wordmark or double Os logo. __Do not use any Vroom logos or other Vroom Trademarks without prior written consent of the Bezos Family Foundation.__  

When do I use the Vroom logo? 

Any changes made to Vroom Content require a Vroom Content License or prior written approval from the Bezos Family Foundation. 

Which changes need to be approved by Vroom? 

No, Vroom does not provide this kind of operational support. __Proposals and funding requests to the Bezos Family Foundation are by invitation only__. The Foundation has no obligation to review, accept, or return unsolicited materials. 

Can Vroom provide funding for translation or adaptation?

Yes, most Vroom Content has been translated in a variety of different languages __without further adaptation or localization__. These translations are considered primarily for use in the everyday lives of families in North America. Vroom Content is currently available in: US English, Spanish (Latin America), Arabic, Bengali, Chinese – traditional and simplified, French, Haitian Creole, Korean, Polish, Russian, Somali, Tagalog, Urdu, Vietnamese, and Yidish. A smaller collection of Vroom Content is available in Ukranian and Dari. 

Is Vroom content available in other languages? 

Co-branding is the act of applying more than one brand or organizational identity in materials, tools, or communications. Vroom has multiple co-branding options available. For more information, explore the options on our For Professionals page. 

What is Co-Branding? Can I Co-brand with Vroom? 

Adaptation of Vroom Content is delicate. We need to make sure the things that make Vroom so effective, including the science behind the content, stays accurate and doesn’t get lost in any changes. 

Why does Vroom need to approve my adapted content? 

Yes, no matter what delivery format you choose, every adaptation of Vroom Content will need to be reviewed. That said, design or delivery templates that will be used multiple times can be approved once and use without further changes without additional approvals. 

If I plan to use text messaging, will Vroom approve every text? 

As a core tenant of Vroom, we make these tools freely available for families and expect Licensees to do the same. This means, among other things, that the Vroom Content cannot be used as part of a sales or funding pitch without the express permission of the Foundation, cannot be sold or otherwise distributed in exchange for value (whether distributed as standalone content or as incorporated into other organizational content.) While, in some instances, Vroom Content can be included in packaging for consumer goods, in curriculum, or other paid products or services, this can only be done with express written permission from the Bezos Family Foundation. What do you mean by “Vroom cannot be used for commercial purposes”?

No, Vroom serves parents and caregivers. Additionally, because of increased legal liability and product testing restrictions, Vroom Content and Vroom Trademarks cannot be put on items intended for children. Can I put Vroom on toys or other items intended for children?

Sublicensing is the act of sharing a license or Vroom Content (not the approved materials that include it) directly with another organization for the purpose of allowing that third party to directly adapt or distribute Vroom Content or Trademarks. 

What is sublicensing? 

No, Vroom Content and any adaptations or derivations of it remain the property of Vroom and the Bezos Family Foundation. The materials, delivery tools, or other intellectual property that are used to share Vroom Content remain the property of the licensee. That said, the terms of the Vroom Content license grants the Vroom and the Bezos Family Foundation a nonexclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free license to reproduce, distribute, perform, display, and otherwise use and exploit any excerpts of Licensee Materials that includes or is derived from Vroom Content, in any manner or media. This is intended to allow us to showcase the work of our licensees and provide examples of Vroom Content in diverse communities and applications.

If Vroom owns any Vroom Content that I have adapted, does that mean they own the resources I put that content into? 

In English, whenever possible Vroom avoids the use of gendered pronouns. If unavoidable, it is preferential to use a non-gender-specific plural pronoun like “they” or “them” rather than “he/she” or a single-gendered pronoun.

How does Vroom handle gender and pronouns? 

All caregiver-facing English Vroom Content and Materials are written at or below a 5th-grade reading level. We measure this with the use of two tools: the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level reading score to measure sentence structure and complexity based on syllable count, and the New Dale Chall score for evaluating vocabulary choice. When in doubt, we adhere to the current AP Style guide for grammar and other linguistic decision making.
